With the title already in the bag, the Sunday Side played their last game of the season over at Moreton. A minibus was hired and the triumphal season was to be celebrated.
The Division Three trophy was presented before the game with much pomp and ceremony to the captain, Nick Coe. The game itself was not one for the purest as some inconsiderate git had got married the day before and a few people were feeling the effects of the celebrations. Shipston managed to sneak a one nil win with a goal from Duncan Wells to finish the season on a high, but this was really just a forerunner for the spectacle to come.
Yes, the much hyped penalty shoot out between Manager, Steve Edwards and Chairman, Tony Lowes took place.
Tony stepped up first and cooly slotted his first penalty passed Dean Beauchamp. What he lacked in power, he made up for with precision!
Steve 'wet paper bag' Edwards prepared for his kick as a hush went through the crowd. He strode up to the spot and scooped the ball harmlessly towards the goal where big Deano tied one of his laces before calmly plucking the ball out of the air. One nil to Tony.
Tony was feeling rather confident at this point and decided to take the piss by taking his next kick with his left foot. To much amazement, the second penalty went the way of the first, low into the bottom corner to the keeper's left.
With the pressure really on, Steve had to net his penalty to stay in with a shout...unfortunately another limp ankled effort was offered up and the glory went to Tony, leaving Steve with the first round - for the whole team!
Despite several observations that Moreton is only 10 minutes away from Shipston, it took us a good 6 hours to get back! To see a selection of pictures from the day please click here.
